Grassley presses Berwick
The top Republican on the Senate Finance Committee claims that CMS Administrator Donald Berwick is refusing to hand over key funding information about his former employer, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement.
Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley, ranking member of the finance panel, had asked Berwick to provide the IHI’s last three Internal Revenue Service Form 990 tax documents and any government waivers made over possible financial conflicts he may have. Grassley wanted to know whether Berwick and his family were continuing to receive benefits from the institute. IHI’s Form 990 for 2004 says he and his wife were awarded healthcare benefits for life.
Berwick in an Aug. 26 response said he wasn’t authorized to disclose some of the information, because it includes nonpublic documents in the IHI’s possession, he wrote.
He also said he forfeited all benefits “except for my vested Supplemental Executive Retirement Plan. … IHI does not currently and will not provide any benefits to me and or my family, including healthcare coverage.”
