Education needed

Modern Healthcare - - Opinions Letters -

Itotally agree with David Blumenthal about the need for IT to work with clinics that serve minorities (“Blumenthal addresses digital divide,” ModernHealthcare.com, Oct. 19).

As an executive at a minority IT healthcare company, I have been working to help solve this problem. But I found that when I reach out to these doctors or providers, most are unsure or confused about the HIPAA and HITECH regulations or just don’t have the budget to even get a solution started.

I think that HIPAA and HITECH should do more to help this segment of the industry to understand the need for EMRs and the time frame so they don’t fall through the cracks and get fined, as many of them will if more education about the HIPAA/HITECH regulations is not made simpler. After all, with more than 40 million uninsured Americans using these clinics as their primary-care solution, we must make sure they are compliant.
