HHS’ Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality awarded $34 million for 22 projects aimed at preventing healthcare-associated infections across healthcare settings. The awardees, announced in a news release, proposed projects addressing healthcare-associated infections in hospitals, ambulatory-care settings, end-stage renal disease facilities and long-term-care facilities. For instance, one project will examine the use of preoperative antibiotics for use in preventing surgical-site infections, while another will focus on preventing and managing Clostridium difficile infections among nursing home residents. “We know that infections can occur in any healthcare setting,” said Carolyn Clancy, AHRQ’s director, in the release. “With these new projects, we can apply what has worked in reducing infections in hospitals to other settings and ultimately help patients feel confident they are in safe hands, regardless of where they receive care.”
