Size of health­care work­force grew by 0.2% in Oc­to­ber

Health­care em­ploy­ers added 24,100 jobs, or 0.2%, to a work­force of 13.8 mil­lion in Oc­to­ber, ac­cord­ing to pre­lim­i­nary sea­son­ally ad­justed fig­ures from the Bureau of La­bor Statis­tics. Health­care has added more than 23,000 jobs each month since July, while the over­all econ­omy posted a net job loss in those months. On an an­nu­al­ized ba­sis, health­care grew by 239,300 jobs dur­ing the 12 months ended in Oc­to­ber, or 1.8%. Hos­pi­tals in Oc­to­ber added 5,100 jobs, or 0.1%, to a work­force of 4.7 mil­lion. Hos­pi­tals added 37,400 jobs in the 12 months ended last month, for an­nual growth of 0.8%. Physi­cians’ of­fices last month added 2,700 jobs, or 0.1%, to their work­force of 2.3 mil­lion. Doc­tors’ of­fices have grown about twice as fast as hos­pi­tals in the past 12 months, adding 41,900, or 1.8%, to a work­force of 2.3 mil­lion.
