Six prominent hospital and health system associations submitted a motion in federal district court asking for permission to file a friend-of-the-court brief in support of this year’s Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The groups, including the American Hospital Association, the Catholic Health Association and the Federation of American Hospitals, contend that they have a vested interest in the outcome of a lawsuit in Pensacola, Fla., U.S. District Court brought by officials from 20 states that challenges the constitutionality of the health reform law. The motion was part of a swarm of such requests filed in the suit last week. Others asking to be heard on the side of Obama administration were the American Nurses Association, several state governors and attorneys general, and a coalition of organizations including the American Academy of Pediatrics and Families USA. U.S. Rep. John Boehner (R-Ohio), believed to be the next House Speaker, filed one on behalf of the plaintiffs, and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said he would do the same.
