Community coalition helps change public policy

Modern Healthcare - - Special Section -

The Finney County Community Health Coalition, organized and led by St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, Kan., has done more than simply engage a variety of stakeholders in public forums about community health issues, such as the need for public transportation and the dangers of secondhand smoke.

St. Catherine and its partners, who serve an area that’s nearly one-half Latino and has a per capita income of just over $17,000, can point to several outcomes of their advocacy work in the past three years: creation of the 11-route City Link bus system, passage of a public smoking plan, development of a Center for Children and Families, and the receipt of grants toward preventing underage drinking and promoting early childhood wellness.
