Modern Healthcare - - Workforce Report 2011 -

Once again, Modern Healthcare presents its annual report focusing on key trends involving the healthcare workforce.

This year, as the industry continues to grapple with a shortage of primarycare providers—a situation that’s expected to be exacerbated as more patients become insured under the health reform law—our attention turns to the nation’s supply of nurse practitioners and physician assistants.

These healthcare professionals, also known as “mid-level” practitioners and “physician extenders,” work in a wide variety of practice settings and medical specialties. And their changing roles and responsibilities also have become the subject of some controversy.
