Jim Sanger announced that he will retire as president and CEO of the St. Louis region of SSM Health Care, St. Louis, at the end of the year after more than 14 years with the Catholic hospital system, according to a news release. Sanger also is a system vice president of SSM Health Care. Sanger, 67, joined SSM in 1997 as president and CEO of St. Mary’s Good Samaritan, a joint venture in southern Illinois between SSM and Felician Health Services, Chicago. SSM named Sanger to head its seven-hospital St. Louis region in November 2007. The Catholic system expects to name a successor before the end of the year to allow Sanger and his replacement to work together during a transition period, according to the release. Sanger was a senior executive with Legacy Health System in Portland, Ore., before joining SSM. Sanger serves on the Missouri Hospital Association’s board of trustees and will be honored with the association’s Visionary Leadership Award this year, according to SSM and the association.
