Jim Sanger an­nounced that he will re­tire as pres­i­dent and CEO of the St. Louis re­gion of SSM Health Care, St. Louis, at the end of the year af­ter more than 14 years with the Catholic hos­pi­tal sys­tem, ac­cord­ing to a news re­lease. Sanger also is a sys­tem vice pres­i­dent of SSM Health Care. Sanger, 67, joined SSM in 1997 as pres­i­dent and CEO of St. Mary’s Good Sa­mar­i­tan, a joint ven­ture in south­ern Illi­nois be­tween SSM and Felician Health Ser­vices, Chicago. SSM named Sanger to head its seven-hos­pi­tal St. Louis re­gion in Novem­ber 2007. The Catholic sys­tem ex­pects to name a suc­ces­sor be­fore the end of the year to al­low Sanger and his re­place­ment to work to­gether dur­ing a tran­si­tion pe­riod, ac­cord­ing to the re­lease. Sanger was a se­nior ex­ec­u­tive with Legacy Health Sys­tem in Port­land, Ore., be­fore join­ing SSM. Sanger serves on the Mis­souri Hos­pi­tal As­so­ci­a­tion’s board of trustees and will be hon­ored with the as­so­ci­a­tion’s Vi­sion­ary Lead­er­ship Award this year, ac­cord­ing to SSM and the as­so­ci­a­tion.
