Shorter work hours for first-year res­i­dents are caus­ing a big shift as hos­pi­tals adapt to the new lim­its. It has meant a hir­ing boom for hos­pi­tal­ists and a need to pack more tasks into shorter shifts. And physi­cians are now find­ing them­selves per­form­ing more ba­sic tasks that used to be han­dled by res­i­dents, caus­ing some­thing of a pro­fes­sional iden­tity cri­sis, says Dr. Bradley Sharpe, left, of the Univer­sity of Cal­i­for­nia at San Fran­cisco.
