29,700 jobs added to health­care in­dus­try in Au­gust

Health­care added 29,700 jobs in Au­gust as the na­tion’s over­all hir­ing stalled and the U.S. un­em­ploy­ment rate held at 9.1%. Health­care em­ploy­ment in­creased 0.2% to a to­tal of 14.1 mil­lion work­ers in Au­gust, ac­cord­ing to pre­lim­i­nary fig­ures from the U.S. Bureau of La­bor Sta­tis­tics. On av­er­age, ac­cord­ing to the sea­son­ally ad­justed fig­ures, health­care added 25,500 jobs each month dur­ing the 12-month pe­riod ended in Au­gust. To­tal health­care job growth for the pe­riod was 305,900, an in­crease of 2.2%. Er­ratic hos­pi­tal hir­ing through the sum­mer months con­tin­ued in Au­gust. Hos­pi­tals added 7,700 jobs last month, a gain of 0.2% but down from 11,000 new em­ploy­ees in July, pre­lim­i­nary fig­ures show. Mean­while, in June, hos­pi­tals cut 1,900 jobs, the first de­cline since a 1,500 re­duc­tion in July 2010. Hos­pi­tal hir­ing was up 74,100 work­ers for the year that ended in Au­gust, an in­crease of 1.6%, to to­tal 4.8 mil­lion work­ers. Physi­cian of­fices added 5,600 work­ers in Au­gust for an in­crease of 0.2%, and hired 4,200 per month dur­ing the 12-month pe­riod. Physi­cian-of­fice pay­rolls were up 2.2% for that pe­riod, adding 50,800 jobs dur­ing that pe­riod to bring to­tal em­ploy­ment to 2.4 mil­lion.
