Saluting courage

Modern Healthcare - - Opinions Letters -

Ihope this will be one of the first of a great many letters to the editor to salute Howard Berman and Bruce McPherson for their courageous message in the Aug. 15 issue of Modern Healthcare (p. 18) urging us all to face facts and “move beyond denial.”

The leadership should recognize that notfor-profit and other community hospitals can and will respond to the national financial crisis with an annual reduction in the rate of increase of less than 0.5% in their expenditures during the upcoming decade. Other alternatives would be much worse for communities and patients and medical staffs— and hospitals too.
