MD Care ac­qui­si­tion helps Hu­mana’s west­ward push

Hu­mana, Louisville, Ky., con­tin­ued to ex­pand in the West with the ac­qui­si­tion of MD Care, a com­pany with 15,000 Medi­care Ad­van­tage HMO mem­bers in South­ern Cal­i­for­nia. Fi­nan­cial terms weren’t re­leased. The signed agree­ment is sub­ject to fed­eral and state ap­proval and is ex­pected to close later this year. MD Care, es­tab­lished in 2007, gen­er­ated $155 mil­lion in rev­enue in 2010, ac­cord­ing to a news re­lease an­nounc­ing the deal. Based in Sig­nal Hill, Calif., MD Care serves four South­ern Cal­i­for­nia coun­ties: Los An­ge­les County, Orange County, River­side County and San Bernardino County. Hu­mana counts 4.3 mil­lion Medi­care mem­bers in Amer­ica, in­clud­ing more than 200,000 in Cal­i­for­nia. Hu­mana was among four in­sur­ers who have agreed to con­trib­ute more than a decade of claims data to a new not-for-profit in­sti­tute formed to sup­port re­search on health­care spend­ing (See story p. 6).
