DAL­LAS— Univer­sity of Texas South­west­ern Med­i­cal Cen­ter held a foun­da­tion-lay­ing cer­e­mony Oct. 11 for its new $800 mil­lion Univer­sity Hos­pi­tal, ex­pected to open in 2015. The 12-floor hos­pi­tal will fea­ture 460 all-pri­vate rooms; of­fice and sup­port space for clin­i­cal re­searchers; an in­te­grated elec­tronic health records sys­tem; ro­bot­ics in the op­er­at­ing rooms; an on-site ed­u­ca­tion cen­ter for fam­ily mem­bers and pa­tients; in-room mon­i­tors that will al­low pa­tients and their care­givers to re­view charts and im­ages such as X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs; and in-room video­con­fer­enc­ing will en­able pa­tients to com­mu­ni­cate vir­tu­ally with mem­bers of their care team or fam­ily and friends, ac­cord­ing to a news re­lease. The build­ing will in­clude: 72 adult ICU rooms; 30 neona­tal ICU rooms; 27 sur­gi­cal suites; 16 la­bor and de­liv­ery rooms; 12 car­diac catheter­i­za­tion, elec­tro­phys­i­ol­ogy, and in­ter­ven­tional ra­di­ol­ogy pro­ce­dure rooms; and six en­doscopy rooms. A build­ing cam­paign seeks to raise $200 mil­lion in sup­port of the hos­pi­tal, while UT South­west­ern physi­cians have com­mit­ted $200 mil­lion of clin­i­cal earn­ings to sup­port the project, ac­cord­ing to the re­lease.
