Jim Brexler, who became president and CEO of Erlanger Health System, Chattanooga, Tenn., during an investigation by HHS’ inspector general’s office that led to a $40 million settlement of physician kickback allegations, plans to retire in the next few weeks, according to Erlanger. Brexler, 60, said in a statement that Erlanger’s biggest contribution to its community is its ability as a public hospital to provide more than $80 million annually in uncompensated care while still recording positive operating income in seven of his eight years at the helm. Erlanger’s affiliation with the University of Tennessee College of Medicine and maintenance of its A3 bond rating are also proud accomplishments of his time at Erlanger, Brexler said. Before joining Erlanger, Brexler was a vice chancellor of the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, and he was CEO of the center’s healthcare services division from 1999 to 2004. In the kickback case, the government alleged that Erlanger used its faculty practice plan to make direct and indirect payments to physicians to induce referrals. Erlanger admitted no wrongdoing in the 2005 settlement. … Caromont Health, Gastonia, N.C., named a new top executive to replace Valinda Rutledge, who accepted a job with the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation within the CMS in May. Randall Kelley will become president and CEO of Caromont in January, according to a news release. Kelley, 53, has been a senior VP of Inova Health System, Falls Church, Va., and CEO of Inova Loudoun Hospital, Leesburg, Va., since 2006. Previously, Kelley was president and CEO of Gateway Health System, Clarksville, Tenn., when it was owned by Triad Hospitals, Plano, Texas, and also has worked for hospitals in Michigan and Ohio. … Froedtert Health hired David Olson as chief strategy officer for the Wisconsin system. Olson, 49, served as executive VP of Columbia St. Mary’s and president of Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital Ozaukee, a hospital in Mequon, Wis., until earlier this year. He is a former president and CEO of Bay Area Medical Center in Marinette, Wis. Froedtert said in a news release that Olson is responsible for leading, directing and implementing strategies that support the system’s growth objectives. He replaces Catherine Jacobson, who was promoted to president of Froedtert Health in June.
