A new soft­ware sys­tem al­lows physi­cians to mon­i­tor and re­pro­gram car­diac de­vices, such as pace­mak­ers and de­fib­ril­la­tors, re­motely by us­ing an ipad.

De­vel­oped by Dr. E. Martin Kloost­er­man, chief of the car­di­ol­ogy depart­ment at Boca Ra­ton (Fla.) Re­gional Hos­pi­tal, the ipad ap­pli­ca­tion al­lows a physi­cian to re­motely ac­cess real-time in­for­ma­tion about a pa­tient’s pace­maker or im­plantable car­dioverter-de­fib­ril­la­tor and then pro­vide pro­gram­mer in­struc­tions to a bed­side nurse.

“If we can con­trol a ro­bot in Mars we can cer­tainly con­trol re­motely a car­diac de­vice in Boca Ra­ton,” Kloost­er­man said in a news re­lease an­nounc­ing the de­vel­op­ment of the new soft­ware sys­tem.

Kloost­er­man him­self tested the sys­tem dur­ing a flight from San Fran­cisco to Or­lando.
