SSM Health Care names new St. Louis CEO
Alongtime executive with SSM Health Care is the new president and CEO of its St. Louis operations, which includes seven of the St. Louis-based system’s 13 hospitals. SSM announced last week that Chris Howard, 47, assumed leadership in midDecember from Jim Sanger, 67, who said in July that he would retire at the end of the year.
Howard has been with the system for 17 years, most recently as regional president and system vice president of SSM Health Care of Oklahoma. Howard now oversees an integrated healthcare network in St. Louis that includes 2,500 staff doctors and more than 11,200 employees. He also represents the St. Louis region as a system vice president for SSM Health Care.
SSM Health Care President and CEO Bill Thompson said in a news release that Howard “is committed to exceptional patient care, and his ability to forge creative relationships with physicians is exactly the kind of leadership that will benefit patients.”
For the nine months that ended Sept. 30, 2011, according to unaudited financial statements, SSM Health Care recorded operating income of $48.2 million on $2.3 billion in operating revenue, although net income was driven down to $3.6 million by investment losses.
