St. Agnes stakes a claim to some holy baseball turf
St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore announced it has agreed to purchase a diamond. A baseball diamond, that is, and not your run-of-the-mill ballpark. St. Agnes is planning to buy the field where Babe Ruth honed his skills as a student at what was then called St. Mary’s Industrial School.
The field is part of an agreement to buy a property most recently part of Cardinal Gibbons High School, which was located on the old St. Mary’s site. St. Agnes has agreed to purchase the property from the Archdiocese of Baltimore, and plans to develop mixed-use services there that are “consistent with Catholic values” and will add to the community. That might include recreational community space, an office building and housing for hospital and community residents, according to a news release. (St. Agnes declined to comment further.)
The development plans also call for the preservation and improvement of St. Mary’s field, where the Babe excelled at hitting and pitching.
Hot dog, here!
