Healthcare accreditation association URAC named William Vandervennet Jr. Vernon Rowen COO and senior VP of external and legal affairs. Vandervennet, who previously worked for insurers Wellpoint and Blue Cross and Blue Shield, will oversee URAC’S information technology, finance, human resources, client services, and development and planning, according to a news release. Rowen formerly was VP of state government affairs for Express Scripts and also has held legislative and policy positions with the Health Insurance Association of America and the American Association of Health Plans, which merged to form America’s Health Insurance Plans. In February, he began working with URAC on an interim basis to lead government relations activities.
St. Peter’s Health Partners, Albany, N.Y., named to succeed Dr. James Reed Steven Boyle as CEO. Boyle, 68, who has held the position since October 2011, said he plans to retire in October. He was previously president and CEO of St. Peter’s Health Care Services, which merged with Northeast Health and Seton Health to create St. Peter’s Health Partners. Reed, president of St. Peter’s, will retain the title when he becomes CEO on Oct. 1, according to a news release. Reed’s age was unavailable. ... Health Management Associates, Naples, Fla., promoted Dr. Michael Wheelis to VP of medical affairs. Wheelis, 50, will work with emergencyroom physicians across the system’s 71 facilities to spearhead the rollout of a department initiative that will track ER metrics. He will also assist hospitals with clinical operations, according to a news release. Wheelis is a 13-year veteran of the company. He also is former president of the Mississippi chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians. ... Mineral Area Regional Medical Center, Farmington, Mo., named CEO, effective Lynn Mergen Aug. 1. Mergen, 44, replaces Jeannette Skinner, who left the position in March. Mergen previously was COO at TMC, Sarasota, Fla., overseeing medical and chiropractic clinics. He has also served as CEO of a number of hospitals, including Havasu Regional Medical Center, Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; Lakewood Ranch Medical Center, Bradenton, Fla.; and Centennial Medical Center, Frisco, Texas. Mineral Area Regional Medical Center is part of Capella Healthcare, Franklin, Tenn.
