Modern Healthcare - - LATE NEWS -

The American Hospital Association named James Hinton its new chair-elect designate. Hinton, 53, will begin leading the board in 2014. The AHA made the announcement of his election at its Leadership Summit in San Francisco. Hinton is the president and CEO of Presbyterian Healthcare Services in Albuquerque, a post he’s held since 1995. “It seemed to me, given what’s going on these days with how healthcare reform will play itself out, this is a really great time to become even more engaged,” Hinton said. “I’m very humbled to be given this opportunity.” Hinton said the implementation of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act will obviously dominate healthcare discussions in coming years, and noted that Presbyterian is one of 32 Pioneer accountable care organizations named by the CMS Innovation Center. “The mindset I’ll bring is that there really are some great things that are possible with healthcare systems, and certainly we have a future of uncertainty with revenue, but there are always ways to actually improve the quality of service as we are being forced to do work with less money.” Hinton assumes the title from Dr. Benjamin Chu, group president, Southern California and Hawaii for Kaiser Foundation Hospitals and Health Plan in Pasadena, Calif. Chu will take over as board chair in January 2013 and replace Teri Fontenot, president and CEO of Woman’s Hospital in Baton Rouge, La.
