ABERDEEN, S.D. — Sanford Health last week opened its new Aberdeen Medical Center, a 48-bed hospital under construction since May 2010. The $60 million facility was built next to the previously established multispecialty Sanford Health Aberdeen Clinic, and Sanford has had a presence in the northeast South Dakota town since 1979, according to a news release. The threestory hospital includes labor and delivery services and a cardiac catheterization lab. “As Aberdeen and surrounding communities continue to grow, so does the need for quality healthcare, and we saw a need for expanded services and improved facilities in this region so we were eager to make the financial investment,” Gordon Larson, CEO of the new hospital, said in the release.
DICKINSON, N.D. — As part of the merger between Medcenter One and Sanford Health that closed this month, Sanford will invest $200 million in the Bismarck-Mandan region of west North Dakota, which is experiencing an oil-related economic and population boom. Plans call for the construction of a “super clinic” in the city of Dickinson, which will include a walk-in clinic, ambulatory surgery center and diagnostic services. Dickinson is “the gateway to the region’s bustling oil fields,” according to a news release. Sanford is a 20-hospital integrated system with headquarters in Sioux Falls, S.D., and Fargo, N.D., Medcenter One is a 165doctor integrated system anchored by a namesake 203-bed hospital in Bismarck, N.D. Dr. Craig Lambrecht, Medcenter One president and CEO, said in the release that the number of workers in North Dakota’s oil fields has grown nearly 700% to 35,000 in 2012 from 4,500 in 2005. During this period, Medcenter experienced increases of 34% in emergency department visits, 20% in clinic visits and 17% in births. “North Dakota is booming,” said Lambrecht, who will remain with the system but with the new title of president and CEO of Sanford Bismarck. He will oversee the west region of Sanford Health, including Medcenter One’s previous coverage area.
