Re: “Groups de­cry pro­posal to cut pub­lichealth fund­ing, end AHRQ,” Mod­ern Health­care.com, July 18: There is no money, I am sorry to say. We are head­ing to­ward bank­ruptcy. With­out mod­i­fi­ca­tion to so­cial pro­grams and spend­ing now—I have been clam­or­ing for it since the ’90s—we will go out of busi­ness as a na­tion. Is it that dif­fi­cult to un­der­stand?

Health­care costs a lot of money. We need se­ri­ous fis­cal re­form, tort re­form and com­pet­i­tive in­sur­ance across state lines, to start with. We need real lead­er­ship to tackle the hard prob­lems in Wash­ing­ton.
