Modern Healthcare - - LATE NEWS -

An executive order signed by President Barack Obama launched a pilot program with HHS-funded facilities to reduce veterans’ mental healthcare wait times. The order directed the Veterans Affairs Department to establish with HHS at least 15 pilot sites where veterans on waiting lists could receive needed mental healthcare. Those sites include community health centers, community mental health clinics, community substance-abuse treatment facilities and other HHS-funded locations in “areas where VA has faced challenges in hiring and placing mental health service providers and continues to have unfilled vacancies or long wait times.” The executive order also directed HHS and the VA to plan a rural mental health recruitment initiative that promotes ways for the VA and rural communities “to share mental health providers when demand is insufficient for either to support a full-time provider.”
