Watching them grow

Healthcare’s Hottest honors those on the fast track

Modern Healthcare - - HEALTHCARE’S HOTTEST - David Burda, Editor

Welcome to our special section honoring Modern Healthcare’s inaugural class of Healthcare’s Hottest, the fastest-growing companies and organizations in the $2.7 trillion healthcare industry. In this section, we rank and profile all 40 of the companies and organizations that made this year’s list. We tell you what they do and what business strategies they use to grow so fast.

In addition to the profiles, you can listen to exclusive podcast interviews with executives from three of the companies on this year’s list: Joel Barthelemy, founder and managing director of GlobalMed; Patrick Foster, president and CEO of Centerre Healthcare; and Dr. Dan Roth, president of Mercy Health Physicians.

You also can view a slideshow of this year’s honorees at modernhealthtos.

To participate in the program, nominees must have generated a minimum of $20 million in annual revenue in their most recent fiscal year and operated in one of four industry sectors: hospitals/hospital systems; physician group practices; payers/insurers; and vendors/suppliers. They must have been headquartered in the U.S. and been in business for at least six years. And they must have either been a privately held for-profit, publicly traded for-profit or private not-for-profit corporation or organization.

We announced the program on Feb. 6, and the deadline to participate was May 25.

A total of 86 companies and organizations participated in this year’s program, which required them to submit financial documentation demonstrating their revenue growth. All submitted financial documentation was tabulated and analyzed by Modern Healthcare.

A sample of Modern Healthcare’s tabulations was independently assessed by the accounting and management consulting firm of Deloitte & Touche, a subsidiary of Deloitte LLP, which provides audit, tax, consulting and financial advisory services to companies of all sizes, including a practice dedicated to middle-market firms. Modern Healthcare chose 40 companies and organizations as Healthcare’s Hottest and is solely responsible for the final determination of the recipients.

We then published an alphabetical list of the 40 finalists, as measured by revenue growth during the past six years, on July 23.

The research for this project was conducted by Modern Healthcare’s research department. Patrick Smith, an intern on Modern Healthcare’s editorial staff, wrote the company profiles. Reporter Paul Barr conducted the podcast interviews. We thank them for their fine work. More importantly, we thank all 86 companies and organizations that participated in this year’s program, and we again congratulate the 40 that made this year’s ranking.
