16 | CAPELLA HEALTHCARE
WHAT IT DOES: Founded in 2005 by healthcare professionals, Capella Healthcare develops and operates healthcare facilities in nonurban settings. HOW IT GREW:
Capella’s initial foray into the healthcare industry was the purchase of four hospitals from HCA in November 2005. Since then, the company has grown significantly. Capella added nine hospitals in 2008 and two more last year.
Capella’s growth has been bolstered by a spirit of collaboration that has led the company to form physician leadership groups and local boards of trustees to provide ideas and guidance from the people with the best knowledge of each hospital’s community.
As hospitals around the country struggle to find funding to improve, Capella is able to offer a sophisticated infrastructure and improved purchasing power. According to company spokeswoman Anne Hancock, Capella offers the resources of a large healthcare system, while staying small enough to give each facility the attention it needs.
