21 | MERGE HEALTHCARE
WHAT IT DOES: Provides medical imaging, including cloud-based solutions for image-intensive specialties, as well as health stations, clinical trials software and data and analytics solutions. HOW IT GREW:
“More health systems and hospitals are realizing the need for an enterprising imaging strategy. We believe that this trend, combined with the fact that the proposed Stage 2 requirements focus heavily on the viewing of diagnostic images, will continue to drive our growth,” CEO Jeff Surges explained in a news release announcing Merge Healthcare’s place among Healthcare’s Hottest.
Surges was referring to the Stage 2 meaningful-use rules for the electronic health-record incentive program that were proposed by the CMS this year; one of the Stage 2 objectives is that by 2014, “more than 40% of imaging results are accessible through certified EHR technology.” Earlier this month, Merge said it hired an investment banking firm to evaluate “a broad range of strategic alternatives,” including a possible sale of the company.
