30 | AMERIGROUP CORP.
WHAT IT DOES:
Partners with states to manage healthcare programs for lower-income families and people with disabilities. HOW IT GREW:
Since 2007, Amerigroup has expanded its market from nine states to 14, spurring a 123% growth in revenue and adding more than 1 million beneficiaries. The company works with states to reduce the cost of healthcare for taxpayers without relying on individual underwriting or denial of pre-existing conditions to save money, according to a corporate fact sheet. Amerigroup’s growth led WellPoint to enter into an agreement in July to purchase the company for $4.9 billion. At that time, WellPoint’s then-president and CEO, Angela Braly, was bullish about growth prospects. “We expect Medicaid spending under managed-care programs to increase by nearly $100 billion by the end of 2014,” she said in a conference call with reporters. Braly stepped down from her positions at WellPoint in late August.
