36 | PIKEVILLE MEDICAL CENTER
WHAT IT DOES: Pikeville Medical Center is a 221-bed hospital located in the mountains of east Kentucky. HOW IT GREW:
Pikeville’s commitment to its patients and employees shows in the number of accolades the hospital has racked up in recent years, including multiple years on Modern Healthcare’s list of the Best Places to Work in Healthcare. That reputation has allowed the medical center to expand its focus and keep adding specialties, with Pikeville now offering more than 300 services.
To accommodate its rapid growth, the hospital is undergoing a $100 million expansion that will include a new 11-story medical office building. Much of Pikeville’s growth can be attributed to the hospital’s realization of its goal to become a “regional referral center” for the rest of Kentucky.
“With nearly 2,000 patients transferred to us from other hospitals last year, we have achieved that goal,” President and CEO Walter May said in a February news release.
