WHAT IT DOES:
Physical medicine management for the workers’ compensation industry. HOW IT GREW:
“MedRisk’s business model is unique and effective because we control physical medicine costs by managing utilization, the key cost driver, rather than simply addressing unit costs,” CEO Shelley Boyce tells Modern Healthcare in an e-mail. Boyce is referring to the “evidence-based treatment guidelines” MedRisk uses to determine the proper physical therapy for injured workers. The guidelines “deliver recommendations for the best treatment of choice,” according to the group’s website, and they also outline therapy that is not recommended. For example, flexibility exercises and at-home injury prevention are recommended for injured workers, while massage and thermotherapy are not.
Boyce says MedRisk has a passion for the workers’ compensation field and controlling costs.
“Since our founding in 1994, our passion for making a difference has always been at the heart of what we do,” she says. “Without passion, we cannot bring the energy necessary to succeed.”
