Phys­i­cal medicine man­age­ment for the work­ers’ com­pen­sa­tion in­dus­try. HOW IT GREW:

“MedRisk’s busi­ness model is unique and ef­fec­tive be­cause we con­trol phys­i­cal medicine costs by manag­ing uti­liza­tion, the key cost driver, rather than sim­ply ad­dress­ing unit costs,” CEO Shel­ley Boyce tells Mod­ern Health­care in an e-mail. Boyce is re­fer­ring to the “ev­i­dence-based treat­ment guide­lines” MedRisk uses to de­ter­mine the proper phys­i­cal ther­apy for injured work­ers. The guide­lines “de­liver rec­om­men­da­tions for the best treat­ment of choice,” ac­cord­ing to the group’s web­site, and they also out­line ther­apy that is not rec­om­mended. For ex­am­ple, flex­i­bil­ity ex­er­cises and at-home in­jury preven­tion are rec­om­mended for injured work­ers, while mas­sage and ther­mother­apy are not.

Boyce says MedRisk has a pas­sion for the work­ers’ com­pen­sa­tion field and con­trol­ling costs.

“Since our found­ing in 1994, our pas­sion for mak­ing a dif­fer­ence has al­ways been at the heart of what we do,” she says. “With­out pas­sion, we can­not bring the en­ergy nec­es­sary to suc­ceed.”
