Amer­i­cans live shorter lives and are sicker than their peers in other af­flu­ent coun­tries, the Na­tional Re­search Coun­cil and the In­sti­tute of Medicine con­cluded in a new report. The U.S. fared worse than av­er­age in nine health ar­eas, in­clud­ing chronic lung disease, heart disease and in­fant mor­tal­ity, and had the most deaths per 100,000 res­i­dents from all causes.
