Crista Durand has been named president of Newport (R.I.) Hospital, effective Aug. 1.
Durand, 43, serves as VP of strategic planning, marketing and business development at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London, Conn., a role she’s held since 2009. She also has several years of finance experience, previously working as CFO of Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam, Conn.
Newport Hospital is part of Providencebased Lifespan, Rhode Island’s largest health system.
Laurie Harting has been named senior VP of operations for Dignity Health’s Greater Sacramento (Calif.) Service Area, which comprises six hospitals with more than 7,000 employees. Her new role is effective July 14.
Harting is currently senior VP of operations for Dignity’s Southern California West Service Area. She has administrative responsibility for three hospitals. Prior to her work in Southern California, Harting served as president and CEO for Mercy Gilbert (Ariz.) Medical Center for six years.
North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System, Great Neck, N.Y., has named Dr. Steven Walerstein
senior VP of medical affairs and associate chief medical officer.
Walerstein, 58, an internist, will oversee several initiatives at North Shore-LIJ, including credentialing and the development of physician leaders. He will retain his role as an associate professor of medicine at the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine.
Previously, Walerstein was executive VP of medical affairs and medical director of NuHealth, the East Meadow, N.Y.based parent of Nassau University Medical Center and an affiliate of North Shore-LIJ. He also served as VP of medical affairs and associate medical director at New York Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn.
Mark Nichols has been named CEO of Starr Regional Medical Center, a twocampus hospital based in Athens, Tenn., that is part of investor-owned LifePoint Hospitals.
Nichols, 56, will assume the role July 7. He will replace Richard Grogan,
who has served as interim CEO since April.
For the past four years, Nichols was CEO of LewisGale Hospital Pulaski (Va.), part of HCA’s LewisGale Regional Health System. He has 19 years of executive experience at HCA hospitals.
