Crista Du­rand has been named pres­i­dent of New­port (R.I.) Hos­pi­tal, ef­fec­tive Aug. 1.

Du­rand, 43, serves as VP of strate­gic plan­ning, mar­ket­ing and busi­ness devel­op­ment at Lawrence & Memo­rial Hos­pi­tal in New Lon­don, Conn., a role she’s held since 2009. She also has sev­eral years of fi­nance ex­pe­ri­ence, pre­vi­ously work­ing as CFO of Day Kim­ball Hos­pi­tal in Put­nam, Conn.

New­port Hos­pi­tal is part of Prov­i­dence­based Life­span, Rhode Is­land’s largest health sys­tem.

Lau­rie Hart­ing has been named se­nior VP of op­er­a­tions for Dig­nity Health’s Greater Sacra­mento (Calif.) Ser­vice Area, which com­prises six hos­pi­tals with more than 7,000 em­ploy­ees. Her new role is ef­fec­tive July 14.

Hart­ing is cur­rently se­nior VP of op­er­a­tions for Dig­nity’s Southern Cal­i­for­nia West Ser­vice Area. She has ad­min­is­tra­tive re­spon­si­bil­ity for three hos­pi­tals. Prior to her work in Southern Cal­i­for­nia, Hart­ing served as pres­i­dent and CEO for Mercy Gil­bert (Ariz.) Med­i­cal Cen­ter for six years.

North Shore-Long Is­land Jewish Health Sys­tem, Great Neck, N.Y., has named Dr. Steven Waler­stein

se­nior VP of med­i­cal af­fairs and as­so­ci­ate chief med­i­cal of­fi­cer.

Waler­stein, 58, an in­ternist, will over­see sev­eral ini­tia­tives at North Shore-LIJ, in­clud­ing cre­den­tial­ing and the devel­op­ment of physician lead­ers. He will re­tain his role as an as­so­ci­ate pro­fes­sor of medicine at the Hof­s­tra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine.

Pre­vi­ously, Waler­stein was ex­ec­u­tive VP of med­i­cal af­fairs and med­i­cal direc­tor of NuHealth, the East Meadow, N.Y.based par­ent of Nas­sau Univer­sity Med­i­cal Cen­ter and an af­fil­i­ate of North Shore-LIJ. He also served as VP of med­i­cal af­fairs and as­so­ci­ate med­i­cal direc­tor at New York Methodist Hos­pi­tal in Brook­lyn.

Mark Ni­chols has been named CEO of Starr Re­gional Med­i­cal Cen­ter, a twocam­pus hos­pi­tal based in Athens, Tenn., that is part of in­vestor-owned LifePoint Hos­pi­tals.

Ni­chols, 56, will as­sume the role July 7. He will re­place Richard Gro­gan,

who has served as in­terim CEO since April.

For the past four years, Ni­chols was CEO of LewisGale Hos­pi­tal Pu­laski (Va.), part of HCA’s LewisGale Re­gional Health Sys­tem. He has 19 years of ex­ec­u­tive ex­pe­ri­ence at HCA hos­pi­tals.
