Cook County system names Shannon CEO

Modern Healthcare - - NEWS MAKER -

Who: Dr. John Shannon, 54, new CEO of Cook County (Ill.) Health & Hospitals System

Previous roles: Chief of clinical integration at Cook County since February 2013 and interim CEO since March 4. Also was chief medical officer and executive VP at Parkland Health & Hospital System, Dallas, 2007-12. Parkland nearly lost its Medicare and Medicaid eligibility during his tenure because of quality and financial issues. “There’s not a day that I’m at work that I’m not thinking of the experience I had at Parkland. I think what happened with CMS and state regulators ... is something that could happen at any number of institutions across the country. It’s given me a special experience and special sensitivity for the awareness that you have to bring to your leadership role.”

Key lesson from Parkland: “When you’re trying to improve access, which is probably the primary driver for safety net institutions, you have to make sure you’re not doing it at the expense of quality and safety.”

On quality/safety reporting: “I would like to see us take the Cook County system to a place where the staff feel very comfortable reporting those kinds of concerns and bringing them to a supervisor’s attention, and those supervisors being very sensitive (to staff alerts).”
