MGMA’s Tur­ney to head Marsh­field Clinic sys­tem

Who:

Dr. Su­san Tur­ney, 61, pres­i­dent and CEO of the Med­i­cal Group Man­age­ment As­so­ci­a­tion un­til Aug. 29.

New role:

Start­ing Sept. 1, CEO of Marsh­field (Wis.) Clinic Health Sys­tem, where she pre­vi­ously worked as the med­i­cal direc­tor for pa­tient fi­nan­cial ser­vices and prac­ticed as an in­ternist for 22 years.

Another first:

Tur­ney will be the first CEO of the new Marsh­field sys­tem, which be­gan to take shape in 2011 and was granted tax-ex­empt sta­tus in Fe­bru­ary. It in­cludes the 700physi­cian mul­ti­spe­cialty clinic that was founded in 1916 and has more than 50 lo­ca­tions; the Se­cu­rity Health Plan; and two small hos­pi­tals. Tur­ney was the first woman to lead the MGMA and the first woman and first physi­cian to serve as ex­ec­u­tive VP and CEO of the Wis­con­sin Med­i­cal So­ci­ety.

MGMA ac­com­plish­ments:

Ex­panded Data So­lu­tions ef­fort, over­saw re­brand­ing and merger with Amer­i­can Col­lege of Med­i­cal Prac­tice Ex­ec­u­tives. “Some peo­ple em­brace change, oth­ers take longer, but the or­ga­ni­za­tion is in a real good place right now.”

Mem­o­ries of Marsh­field:

“They had a model of world-class care 10 years ago. It’s where I learned the whole busi­ness of care with man­agers who sup­port physi­cians to do their job and where I learned to put the pa­tient first. At MGMA, I used Marsh­field as an ex­am­ple to many peo­ple of the right way to do things.”
