Soon-shiong to head can­cer care at Prov­i­dence

Who: Dr. Pa­trick Soon-Shiong, 62 New po­si­tion: Global direc­tor for can­cer ser­vices and bioin­for­mat­ics at Prov­i­dence Health & Ser­vices, Ren­ton, Wash. He will lead a first-ofits-kind ge­nomics pro­gram at the health sys­tem. Other roles: Chair­man of the Chan Soon-Shiong Fam­ily Foun­da­tion and CEO of Nan­tHealth, a Los An­ge­les­based clin­i­cal science and health­care tech­nol­ogy com­pany. He also pi­o­neered sev­eral med­i­cal and drug in­ven­tions, in­clud­ing Abrax­ane, used to treat breast, lung and pan­cre­atic can­cer. On next-gen­er­a­tion can­cer care: “This is the fi­nal clin­i­cal com­bi­na­tion of a decade’s worth of pur­suits, rec­og­niz­ing once the hu­man genome was dis­cov­ered that the world of can­cer care will change to can­cer ge­nomics. With Prov­i­dence, there’s an op­por­tu­nity to take one of the largest health­care sys­tems on the West Coast … and in­sti­tute this whole new par­a­digm of can­cer care that is ev­i­dence-based and ge­nomic-driven.” Can­cer ge­nomics and co­or­di­nated care: “(Can­cer ge­nomics) al­lows us to un­der­stand the cost, as well as un­der­stand the care that is given, so we can un­der­stand out­comes in real time. It al­lows us to drive what you call pop­u­la­tion health man­age­ment and co­or­di­nated care, and that is so crit­i­cal in to­day’s value-based care sys­tem.”
