Heart trans­plants were in the news re­cently when sur­geons in Syd­ney an­nounced that they had per­formed suc­cess­ful grafts in sev­eral adult pa­tients us­ing hearts that had stopped beat­ing for up to 20 min­utes from “donors after cir­cu­la­tory death.” This de­vel­op­ment could lead to avail­abil­ity of more donor hearts. The num­ber of U.S. trans­plants has re­mained sta­ble at about 2,000 for years, limited by the num­ber of vi­able or will­ing donors. Here are some statis­tics on heart trans­plants in the U.S.
