Phar­ma­ceu­ti­cal gi­ant Pfizer will dou­ble the in­come thresh­old for pa­tients to be el­i­gi­ble for financial as­sis­tance in re­sponse to an in­creas­ing num­ber of cus­tomers not be­ing able to af­ford their pre­scrip­tion medicines.

The change would al­low sin­gle pa­tients earn­ing up to four times the fed­eral poverty level, or $47,080, or a fam­ily of four with house­hold in­come of up to $97,000 to re­ceive more than 40 dif­fer­ent drugs for free through its RxPath­ways pro­gram. Pfizer said that be­tween 2010 and 2014, as many as 2.5 mil­lion peo­ple on RxPath­ways got ac­cess to more than 30 mil­lion pre­scrip­tions. The pro­gram helped about 350,000 in 2014. The ex­pan­sion would serve an ad­di­tional 200,000 pa­tients.
