Th­ese stan­dards are es­sen­tial to help hos­pi­tals iden­tify their ra­di­ol­ogy ser­vices’ strengths and weak­nesses, set clin­i­cally rel­e­vant per­for­mance tar­gets and track qual­ity im­prove­ment ef­forts. Ideally, stan­dard ra­di­ol­ogy best prac­tices would ad­dress three broad ar­eas of prac­tice qual­ity that are clearly de­fined, mea­sur­able, and clin­i­cally im­por­tant:
