Joe Walsh has been named executive VP of operations at Pensiamo, the new UPMC-IBM Corp. venture formed in July that will help hospitals manage supply-chain operations with assistance from the IBM Watson cognitive computing system. He will start Nov. 7.

Walsh, 42, VP and chief purchasing officer at Salt Lake City-based Intermountain Healthcare, has been with the system, a leader in supply chain management, since 2008.

Pensiamo is majority-owned by UPMC, with IBM owning about 10%. The venture marks Watson Health’s first foray into the healthcare supply chain, and it’s the first time that Watson will connect clinical and operational insights.
