Dr. Sheldon Retchin, CEO of Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, resigned last week after faculty accused him of harming the institution’s culture and reputation.

Days before Retchin’s resignation, some of the university’s most prominent physicians and professors wrote to the school’s leadership team saying Retchin had caused colleagues to resign or take early retirement.

Their absences have resulted in “significant delays in filling vacant positions left by multiple departing faculty. This has created physician understaffing, which endangers patient safety and lowers the quality of care,” according to the letter. Retchin denied the accusations. Retchin will take a leave of absence and return to Ohio State University in a new role focused on health policy research and teaching.

The university released a statement saying the claims were false but that Retchin had chosen to move on.
