Mur­phy to lead Geisinger’s new in­no­va­tion in­sti­tute

Who: Karen Mur­phy

New role: Ex­ec­u­tive vice pres­i­dent, chief in­no­va­tion of­fi­cer and found­ing di­rec­tor of Geisinger Health Sys­tem’s new Steele In­sti­tute for Health­care In­no­va­tion. She’ll be­gin in Septem­ber.

Back­ground: Most re­cently, Mur­phy, a reg­is­tered nurse, was health sec­re­tary for the state of Penn­syl­va­nia. In that role, she launched the Pre­scrip­tion Drug Mon­i­tor­ing Pro­gram to bat­tle the opi­oid epi­demic and put in place the state’s med­i­cal mar­i­juana pro­gram. Ear­lier, she was di­rec­tor of the CMS’ $900 mil­lion State In­no­va­tion Mod­els Ini­tia­tive.

Trans­for­ma­tion: “Through­out my en­tire ca­reer, I have al­ways fo­cused on trans­form­ing health­care de­liv­ery and in­no­va­tion, and I be­lieve this is a con­tin­u­a­tion of that work,” Mur­phy said. In her new role, she will lead the Steele In­sti­tute’s team, work­ing to trans­form health­care de­liv­ery by im­prov­ing pa­tient ex­pe­ri­ence, qual­ity, ef­fi­ciency and out­comes.
