Dr. J. Mario Molina is buy­ing 17 clin­ics from the com­pany that bears his fam­ily name.

The for­mer CEO of Molina Health, who was un­ex­pect­edly ousted ear­lier this year, said the com­pany is get­ting out of the pri­mary-care busi­ness to fo­cus on in­sur­ance. The Cal­i­for­nia clin­ics, some of which his fa­ther opened when he be­gan the com­pany in 1980, serve about 120,000 pa­tients an­nu­ally. Mario Molina al­ready owns the med­i­cal group that staffs the Cal­i­for­nia clin­ics. Molina Health­care said it could not com­ment on on­go­ing ne­go­ti­a­tions and would not con­firm that it is clos­ing its pri­ma­rycare clin­ics, or that it is sell­ing them to Mario Molina.
