N.Y. seeks applications to add drug-treatment capacity
New York state officials have released request for applications to finance up to 75 community-based, medically supervised drug treatment beds statewide. A total of $10 million in funding is available. Priority will be given to applicants in counties with a greater need for detox services.
There are 106 community detox beds in New York City but none on Staten Island, in Nassau County or in Westchester County. The New York City Health Department also recently expanded a program that deploys peer advocates to work with people who arrive in the emergency department after an opioid overdose.
The effort is part of the city’s $38 million HealingNYC initiative to reduce overdose deaths by 35% within five years. —
