Way to Go, Joe!
Joe Salvo, who is the cochairman for the Car Selection Committee at the San Marino Motor Classic (see page 32) and whose cars have appeared on a couple of our covers over the years, was invited to participate in the Antique Automobile Club of America’s (AACA) Zenith Award competition. Just 16 cars from the more than 3,500 that were judged at AACA shows around the country were nominated for the Best Restoration award, which recognizes the best restoration of the previous year and was handed out at the AACA Grand National meet at Greensburg, Pennsylvania, in June.
Cars participating for the award ran the gamut from Salvo’s 1970 Chevelle SS396 to a Model T pickup. While Salvo and restorer Chris White worked hard for years to make the Chevelle as accurate (and beautiful) as possible, the Zenith Award went to a stately 1935 Packard with some 11,000 hours invested in its restoration. For his efforts, Salvo received the crystal trophy he is holding at the show, where it was so humid, “you could see steam coming off the treetops,” he said.
