Dancing Wolf Gallery
This Yokuts gambling tray, circa 1900, is in near pristine condition. Found in the Inyo-kern area of Central/southern California, this 11-inch tray features a “Rattlesnake” pattern as can be seen by the red and black diamond bands. According to the gallery, one of the most interesting aspects of this type of basket is that the women of the Yokuts were the gamblers of the group and would occasionally play for days on end. The tray and dice (made of walnut shells) were used for the game. Materials are willow, or grasses, bracken fern root and redbud.
