At last year’s mar­ket, Arthur Holmes Jr. won the top carv­ing prize for his work of a rain god­dess katsina. “It was sur­pris­ing to win. You can never tell who’s go­ing to win be­cause, at least for me, I don’t ac­tu­ally think of it as a com­pe­ti­tions. I don’t like to com­pete be­cause I would pre­fer my work speak for it­self,” he says. “Whether it’s a multi-fig­ure or big piece, or a small one, my work is very sim­ple and pow­er­ful. What it rep­re­sents, that is the whole thing be­hind its cre­ation. Each work has a lot of mean­ing.”
