PRESLEY LAFOUNTAIN (TURTLE MOUNTAIN BAND OF CHIPPEWA)

-

Presley Lafountain has been part of the Native sculpture movement for the past 44 years and has worked with Doug Hyde, Bob Haozous and was mentored by Allan Houser over many years. Lafountain primarily works in stone sourced from various locations around the world including marbles from Italy and the United States as well as alabaster from Moab, Utah, and Colorado. He also does work in limestone, soapstone, Belgium marble and he does bronze casting.

“The influence of being part of the modern world and also being a Native American has been a source of strength that enables me to keep my own personal integrity and carve from the strength within myself,” says the artist. “I leave a lot to the imagination; I carve deliberately without detail; I don’t want to carve just beautiful objects. I want to interpret a whole spectrum of emotions.”
