2018 Youth Fellowships awarded
Raven Naranjo (San Ildefonso/navajo), Georgeanne Growingthunder (Nakoda/ Dakota/kiowa/seminole) and Niska Kempenich (Turtle Mountain Band Chippewa) have been awarded the 2018 Indian Market Youth Fellowships. Youth fellowships are designed for young artists who wish to participate in the 2018 Indian Market. The monetary award is intended to help purchase supplies and to assist with research projects that enhance their skills.
Raven, 11, has always loved drawing, and he is now learning how to paint using acrylics. Georgeanne, 6, learned to make jewelry from her grandmother, and will use the fellowship to help buy her own supplies like dentillum, abalone, conch and quahog. Niska, 10, has learned traditional arts like beading, moccasin making and birch bark art from her mother, and also paints. With her fellowship, she will buy her own supplies and take a trip to harvest more birch bark.
