2018 Youth Fel­low­ships awarded

Raven Naranjo (San Ilde­fonso/navajo), Ge­orgeanne Grow­ingth­un­der (Nakoda/ Dakota/kiowa/semi­nole) and Niska Kem­penich (Tur­tle Moun­tain Band Chippewa) have been awarded the 2018 In­dian Mar­ket Youth Fel­low­ships. Youth fel­low­ships are de­signed for young artists who wish to par­tic­i­pate in the 2018 In­dian Mar­ket. The mon­e­tary award is in­tended to help pur­chase sup­plies and to as­sist with re­search projects that en­hance their skills.

Raven, 11, has al­ways loved draw­ing, and he is now learn­ing how to paint us­ing acrylics. Ge­orgeanne, 6, learned to make jew­elry from her grand­mother, and will use the fel­low­ship to help buy her own sup­plies like den­til­lum, abalone, conch and qua­hog. Niska, 10, has learned tra­di­tional arts like bead­ing, moc­casin mak­ing and birch bark art from her mother, and also paints. With her fel­low­ship, she will buy her own sup­plies and take a trip to har­vest more birch bark.
