CONTEMPORARY V.S. OLD STYLE

-

Contemporary

» These works feature figures that are rendered very realistically with fingers, toes, muscle definition in the limbs and torso, facial features and detailed accessories.

» Often painted with oil or acrylic paint, though sometimes with mineral pigment paint.

» Often displayed on a cottonwood, or even stone, base due to the delicate balance and shape of the work.

» Carved in cottonwood root.

» Typically these works are much more expensive, with top artists commanding five-figure prices for large, detailed works. Even smaller works are priced upwards of $1,000.

Old Style

» These works present the classic katsina shapes that are more abstract and less realistic. The bodies tend to be round and the limbs stiff.

» Old-style works are often accented with feathers, grass or small sticks.

» Carved in cottonwood root. » Can be displayed standing or hanging on a wall.

» These dolls start at a lower price point, often at around $200 and can go to $1,000.

» Painted in almost exclusively mineral pigment paints.
