To date, the sin­gle rich­est ac­count of James Booker’s life is Lily Ke­ber’s 2013 fea­ture­length doc­u­men­tary, Bayou Maharajah. I am in­debted to this film and to chap­ters on Booker in two books about New Or­leans rhythm and blues, Jason Berry’s Up from the Cra­dle of Jazz (Da Capo Press, 1992) and Jeff Hannusch’s I Hear You Knockin’ (Swal­low Publi­ca­tions, 1985), as well as to Joshua Pax­ton’s won­der­ful tran­scrip­tions of Booker’s
