WEST HAVEN » Police were called in Thursday morning to investigate a possible breach of City Hall computer servers, Mayor Ed O’Brien and Director of Finance Kevin McNabola confirmed Thursday night.

McNabola said he didn’t know for sure what data, if any, the breach — discovered two days after Tuesday’s Democratic primary — involved or whether anything was missing or compromised, although he had been told it may have been an unsuccessful attempt.

“There was a data breach with some servers earlier this morning,” McNabola said Thursday night. “It was being investigated and looked at by our IT director and the authorities.

“I do know the IT director did indicate that there was nothing compromised or stolen off of the servers — and he had implemented all of the necessary safeguards” to prevent that from happening, McNabola said.

The city’s IT director, Dave Richards, could not immediately be contacted.

Police did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

“I know there was a data breach,” O’Brien said late Thursday. “The police cyber crimes unit is looking into it . ... Police were there all afternoon — for at least three or four hours.

“But to the best of my knowledge there was no personal information, no Social Security numbers, no medical records” in-

volved, he said.

O’Brien, who lost by a narrow margin in Tuesday’s primary against Democratic challenger Nancy Rossi, said that as far as he could tell, “I think it was an unsuccesful attempt.

“I think someone tried to hack in somehow,” he said.

“Obviously, we take any kind of a breach very seriously,” said McNabola. “Anytime there’s a breach of servers or security, it’s going to be an automatic police investigation. At this point, it’s an ongoing investigation.”

McNabola, who confirmed information initially obtained from sources, said he didn’t know whether the attempt to access the servers was from within or outside of City Hall.

“That’s still being investigated,” he said.

The city has several servers, McNabola said.

One source said there are very few people with the passwords to get into the servers and that McNabola was one of them.

McNabola said he didn’t know whether he had the password to get into the specific server in question and “I’m not sure I know how to get into the server.

“Typically, the only ones who go into the servers are the IT people,” he said.
