3 theaters team up on THRIVE program

- By Joe Amarante

Three state theaters, after seeking out the advice of local teens, have teamed up to create a free, virtual summer program hosted by Broadway actress and singer Kelli O’Hara.

According to a release on the THRIVE program, the Shubert Theatre, Long Wharf Theatre and Westport Country Playhouse co-created the online program in response to COVID-19 and the substantial number of high school students experiencing a loss of summer programs and employment opportunities. It will run from July 20 through Aug. 8 and encourage accountability as it inspires young people to continue learning during this tumultuous time.

High school students in New Haven and Fairfield counties are eligible to participate. The deadline to sign up for THRIVE, which stands for Teens Having Resilience in a Virtual Environment, is Monday, July 13.

The program will engage high school students in daily check-ins and workshops with local artists and organizations that explore everything from wellness to the arts via social media, the release said. The idea is to foster curiosity, healthy habits and meaningful connections between participants and facilitators that will lead to future engagements and opportunities.

Local artists, activists, service providers and organizations will lead interactive workshops and discussions that have been requested by young people in area communities. Participants will earn gift cards based on participation in discussions and workshops. In addition to participants, the program will be supported by three students from Youth@Work (a mentoring/work prep program) who will help promote the program, assist facilitators during workshops and create a record of this historic moment.
